How many times a day are you looking at your phone? Better yet, how many times a day are you scrolling through social platforms and find yourself comparing your life, achievements, skills, relationships, and status to others? It's a question worth pondering.
Technology is a beautiful thing for so many reasons. It connects us, provides endless information, and offers entertainment at our fingertips. Yet, it is one of the top reasons we find ourselves feeling incomplete, not good enough, and struggling to feel validated. When we get that dopamine hit from likes and positive comments, we can feel good for a short time, but wow, is it short. Sound familiar?
Comparing ourselves to where others are in life—or more accurately, where others are perceived to be in life—is one of the most crippling parts of feeling validated. Social media platforms often present a curated version of reality, showcasing the highlights and successes of others while omitting the struggles and setbacks. This selective portrayal can lead us to believe that everyone else is living a perfect life, achieving great things, and experiencing happiness, while we are left feeling inadequate.
As a Certified Life Coach, I have seen firsthand the impact of this constant comparison. It can erode self-esteem, create feelings of envy, and lead to a perpetual state of dissatisfaction. The truth is, everyone's journey is unique, and there is no one-size-fits-all measure of success, fulfillment, or happiness. What we see on social media is not the full picture; it is a snapshot of moments that others choose to share.
So, how can we break free from this cycle of comparison and find true validation? Here are a few strategies:
Limit Social Media Usage: Set boundaries for how much time you spend on social platforms. Use that time to engage in activities that bring you joy and fulfillment.
Practice Gratitude: Focus on the positive aspects of your own life. Keep a gratitude journal and write down things you are thankful for each day.
Celebrate Your Achievements: Recognize and celebrate your own accomplishments, no matter how small they may seem. Every step forward is progress.
Seek Real Connections: Invest time in building meaningful relationships with people who support and uplift you. Genuine connections can provide a sense of belonging and validation.
Mindfulness and Self-Reflection: Engage in mindfulness practices and self-reflection to understand your own values and goals. This can help you stay grounded and focused on what truly matters to you.
Remember, validation comes from within. It is not dependent on external approval or comparison to others. Embrace your unique journey, celebrate your progress, and find joy in the present moment.
